Animal Amigos

This May, we are so excited to welcome the newest additions to the Indianapolis Zoo – our very own community of chimpanzees!

Chimpanzees are mostly found in Central and West Africa, and can be found in countries such as Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Tanzania and Zambia. They are a very adaptable species and thrive in a variety of different habitats like savannas, woodlands, and tropical forests. Chimpanzees have even been observed to use sticks, rocks and leaves as tools for acquiring food. In recent years, DNA research has shown that chimpanzees are the closet living relative to modern humans.

Like all animals at the Indianapolis Zoo, our chimpanzees are ambassadors for their counterparts in the wild. Today, they are listed as an endangered species, with their biggest threats being habitat destruction, poaching and disease. Through the Animal Amigo program, you support the care of our chimpanzees here at the Zoo and support the Indianapolis Zoo’s global conservation efforts.
