Media Center
The Indianapolis Zoo Communications and PR team values relationships with journalists, content creators and its community. The Zoo serves as an amazing backdrop to inform and educate people not only about the animals on exhibit but also the larger conservation causes supported by the Zoo. This greater purpose is built into our mission “To protect nature and inspire others to care for our world.”
The Zoo works regularly with local and regional media, as well as other partner organizations, to film onsite and promote and discuss year-round events. In order to facilitate these requests, the Zoo has policies in place that require advance notification to Zoo Communications and PR before media and other requesting entities are allowed on the property.
In 1944, journalist Lowell Nussbaum helped found the Articles of Incorporation for the Indianapolis Zoological Society. In 1962, construction of the Indianapolis Zoo began. Two years later it opened on 20 acres of land on the east side of Indianapolis as a children’s zoo.
The groundbreaking for the current site of the Indianapolis Zoo in White River State Park began in 1985 and after three years of construction, the new Indianapolis Zoo opened with five times as many animals as the original site. The Indianapolis Zoo has continued to expand over the years, incorporating new exhibits every few years.
The Zoo is also home to the Polly Horton Hix Institute for Research and Conservation and the Global Center for Species Survival, working to educate the public on conservation and making strides in field work and animal conservation around the world. The Indianapolis Zoo’s passion for saving species also birthed the Indianapolis Prize in 2006, recognizing extraordinary people who have made significant improvements in the survival of endangered species. This large grant allows these conservationists to continue their work to protect nature.
