Electronics Recycling Day

Nov. 8 | 8:30am-12:30pm | Zoo South Parking Lot on Harding Street

Recycle electronics, shred paper and safely discard medications

Stay in your car—just pull into the Zoo’s South Lot and our partners at Technology Recyclers will do the rest!

We’ll take almost anything with a plug: phones, cables, batteries, TVs, microwaves, computers and more. Laptops are free to recycle; TVs and monitors have a $20 cash fee. (No large appliances.) Hard drives are securely wiped before destruction.

Plus, take advantage of secure document shredding through Crime Stoppers ($5 per bag) and safely dispose of unwanted prescription medications through the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department free prescription drug collection.

Thanks to your support, this event has kept more than 51 tons of electronics out of local landfills!

This event is not in the Zoo’s main parking lot on Washington Street.

To reach the South Lot: continue west on Washington Street, turn left on South Harding Street, cross the railroad tracks and the lot will be on your left.

Old electronics being recycled

Why Recycle?

E-waste makes up only 2% of America’s trash but creates up to 70% of its toxic pollutants—making recycling essential.

Despite rising tech use, electronics recycling is declining: global e-waste hit 50 million tons in 2019 and could more than double by 2050. In the U.S., recycling rates dropped from 42% in 2014 to under 36% in 2017.

The Zoo is proud to lead by example—hosting two electronics recycling events each year and recycling everything from office paper and plastics to tree trimmings and “Zoo doo.” Special thanks to Waste Management, our everyday recycling partner.
