Field Conservation Project Support Grants

Our Mission

The Indianapolis Zoo’s mission is to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world. A cornerstone in advancing that mission is the Zoo’s support of conservation activities that protect species (plants, animals and fungi) and ecosystems. The Zoo extends its reach through financial support and collaborative involvement with various organizations, researchers and conservationists. Their dedicated work aims to safeguard unique species and their environments for the benefit of future generations.

Applications for Indianapolis Zoological Society Field Conservation Project Support Grants are by invitation only.

Application Guidelines

About the Indianapolis Zoological Society Field Conservation Project Support Grants

Applications for Indianapolis Zoological Society Field Conservation Project Support Grants are by invitation only.
Funding Criteria
Proposals addressing one or more of the following will be considered for funding:
  • Research activities conducted to increase scientific knowledge of a species’ biology and ecology. Results should be used to inform field conservation action programs.
  • Investigators who publish their findings in scientific literature, train graduate students, and increase local capacity are preferred.
  • Consideration will be given to those areas where Indianapolis Zoo funding could have a measurable impact on ensuring a successful conservation outcome for the species in the wild.
  • Salaries and equipment are eligible for funding. Projects that support alternative sustainable livelihoods, sustainable co-existence, and engaging communities to actively support conservation may also be supported.
  • Projects that align with conservation priorities established through the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s Species Survival Commission network are preferred.
Types of Support
The Zoo funds two types of conservation project support:
  1. Short-Term Project Grants: This program funds projects that last 12 to 18 months. These grants are project-oriented and have a defined beginning and end within the grant period. Grant amounts typically range from $1,000 to $25,000. A final report is required upon completion of the project (an annual interim report is required for projects that last 18 months).
  2. Long-Term Project Grants: This program funds multi-year proposals with a clearly defined project period of three to five years, with an annual award of up to $50,000. Programs should have clear, definable goals. Approval of annual progress reports will be required for each yearly payment, along with a final report upon completion of the multi-year project. These reports are required to be considered for subsequent Long-Term Project Grants.
