Featured Amigo: Macaw
Cascades of color are what make the macaw stand out in a crowd! The macaw, this quarter's featured Animal Amigo, is one of the most colorful animals at the Indianapolis Zoo. When you get close to the macaws, you will see that their large beaks are ideal for cracking nuts and seeds that make up a significant part of their diets both at the Zoo and in their native habitat, the rainforests of Central and South America. They also have a scaly tongue with a bone inside that allows them to cut into fruits, leaves and the stems of delectable plants.
Adult macaws usually choose a mate that they stay with for a lifetime. These two share food, groom one another and breed once a year. Macaws communicate with their mates and the flock of 10-30 individuals through a sound that we would often identify as screaming or squawking. They use these sounds to communicate their territory and to warn one another of predators.
Next time you visit the Indianapolis Zoo, just look up as one of our three flocks of macaws flies over your head! As you experience the wonders of flight, you'll also learn more about the conservation challenges facing these species in the wild, as about one-third of the world's native macaws are endangered due to the destruction of habitat and international pet trade. Your support of the Animal Amigo program demonstrates your commitment to preserving all threatened and endangered species and helping fulfill the Indianapolis Zoo's mission to empower people and communities, both locally and globally, to advance animal conservation.
