Featured Amigo: Ring-tailed Lemur
On April 2, 2017, our ring-tailed lemur troop grew by two! Mom Bree gave birth to curious twin boys, Rooney and Quigley, making Teagan a big sister. An experienced mom, Bree takes a relaxed but attentive approach to her twins. Now that Rooney and Quigley are completely weaned, they are both very independent. Often found playfully snatching bananas and grapes from others, the twins enjoy exploring on their own and interacting with the rest of the troop of seven lemurs, including dad Finnegan.
Native to the island of Madagascar, these endangered animals live in large, highly social groups led by a dominant female. Following a pregnancy that lasts around 20 weeks, females typically give birth to a single infant, though twins will happen occasionally, making Rooney and Quigley's arrival extra special!
Although males often leave the troop once they reach maturity, females typically remain in the same family group throughout their lifetime. In fact, Teagan, Bree's daughter born in 2013, is still part of the Zoo's troop and is regularly grooming Bree and the youngsters.
The Animal Amigo program supports the care of Rooney and Quigley, the rest of our ring-tailed lemurs and all the animals at the Indianapolis Zoo by funding food, medical treatment, enrichment items and habitat improvements. Your support of the Animal Amigo program demonstrates your commitment to preserving all threatened and endangered species and helps fulfill the Indianapolis Zoo's mission to empower people and communities, both locally and globally, to advance animal conservation.
