Bowling for Rhinos

Thanks for making 2014 a success! Check back soon for a date for 2015.

Thanks to all that joined the Indianapolis American Association of Zookeepers, Inc. in their 2014 Bowling for Rhinos fundraiser! It was a great success with 138 bowlers coming together and raising $5,650, which will go directly to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (LWC) in Kenya, Ujung Kulon National Park in Java, Indonesia, and Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (BBSNP) in Sumatra, Indonesia.

The rhinos of the world are in a special predicament. In 2013, there were 1,006 rhinos poached in South Africa alone. Some scientists believe that we will reach a tipping point in 2014, where the number of rhinos poached this year will outnumber the rhino babies born. The good news is that you can help! All you have to do is bowl! Get a team together and start planning for next year's event! Donation money goes to help three ecosystems: Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Africa, Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park in Sumatra and Ujung Kulon in Java. Not only will conservation in these three areas help rhinos, it will also help a whole host of other animals, such as Sumatran tigers and Malayan sun bears.

LWC (formerly Ngare Sergoi Sanctuary) is a 65,000-acre protected area that is home to the endangered black and white rhinos. Ujung Kulon is a 300-square-mile protected area that is home to the last 47 Javan rhinos in the world! BBSNP is 3,568 square kilometers of lush tropical rainforest where the Sumatran rhinos live, along with elephant, tiger, and Malayan sun bear. All three support an entire ecosystem, including some of the world's most endangered plants and animals.
