Sensory-Friendly Christmas at the Zoo

As a continuation of our commitment to offer an enjoyable Zoo experience for all guests, the Indianapolis Zoo is adding something new to Christmas at the Zoo in 2024: sensory friendly evenings.

On two select nights, the Christmas at the Zoo event will be a low sensory experience with alterations to sound, smell and lighting.

Also on these two nights, the Zoo will be offering a calming room in the HIX Institute across from the Oceans building for guests who might require a quiet space for self-regulation.

As with every other day, KultureCity sensory bags and lap pads will be available to borrow for this event at no charge.

Please visit the KultureCity section of our accessibility page for details.

WHEN: Tuesdays, December 3 and 10 – 5-9pm

What to Expect:
  • Music levels will be reduced or turned off.
  • Flashing lights will be converted to solid where possible.  For areas where there is not possible signage will provide warning so guests can prepare.
  • For the duration of the evening, the thematic smells will be turned off.
  • Our Zoo team will be altering animal chats and activities to better meet the needs of our sensitive guests.  No voice amplifiers will be used as part of animal chats and the Dolphin Presentation will have minimal light changes and reduced volume.
  • Please note that to ensure guest, staff and animal safety during this nighttime event, some lighting and sounds will remain at normal levels.
