The Prize also awards five DeHaan Finalists and an Emerging Conservationist with $50,000 each. Granted biennially, this award was established to bring the world’s attention to the cause of animal conservation and the brave, talented and dedicated men and women who spend their lives saving the Earth’s endangered animal species.
The Indianapolis Zoo is deeply saddened by the passing of Biruté Mary Galdikas, a pioneering primate conservationist and Indianapolis Prize DeHaan Finalist. Dr. Galdikas devoted her life to studying and protecting orangutans, transforming our understanding of these remarkable apes and inspiring global efforts to safeguard their future. We are profoundly grateful for her extraordinary contributions, and her inspiring legacy will continue to guide all of us who work to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world.
