The Socotra archipelago has an unusually high number of endemic species – those that are found nowhere else in the world.

Of the 27 described species of sturgeon, 26 are now at risk of extinction. The 27th, the Chinese Paddlefish, is classified as Extinct.

World Wetlands Day is a day for us to celebrate, but it is also a call to action to protect and restore these incredible habitats.

It’s far more horrifying to consider a future without these and other essential species with unearned reputations for being scary.
