Officials from the Indianapolis Zoo announce Dr. Lily-Arison René de Roland, renowned scientist and biodiversity conservationist in Madagascar, as the 2025 Winner of the Indianapolis Prize. Throughout his years of research and expeditions, René de Roland has discovered several new species, led the establishment of four national protected areas and developed community-focused conservation programs.
Ugandan conservationist and researcher, Mwezi “Badru” Mugerwa, was named the Winner of the 2025 Indianapolis Prize Emerging Conservationist Award. This honor—only the second given to date—is presented to a conservationist under 40 who has made a significant impact on saving an animal species or group of species. Mugerwa is the founder and director of Embaka, a grassroots community-based conservation organization focused on the preservation of the African golden cat.
Six distinguished conservationists have been named as DeHaan Finalist for the 2025 Indianapolis Prize award. The biennial award recognizes animal conservationists who have achieved major victories in saving an animal species or group of species.
