Being a full time (40 hr./week – year-round) Gardener at the Zoo’s White River Gardens requires an energetic, motivated gardening/landscaping expert who thrives on physically demanding work and prefers working outside.

Our horticulture team maintains the landscaping and exhibits throughout our 64-acre campus, including management of White River Gardens and cultivation of plants in our majestic glass conservatory. The team also assists with clearing snow from Zoo grounds.  Being part of this team requires physical stamina, excellent interpersonal skills, a positive outlook, with the ability to work independently and productively.

The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the Zoo’s plant collection which features numerous species of trees, shrubs and perennials. Responsibilities include all aspects of grounds maintenance from weeding and watering to design and installation.  Experience with irrigation systems, pest management, plant identification and power equipment are a strongly preferred.

Position requirements:

  • Extensive knowledge of plants and their care, power equipment, and irrigation systems
  • Ability to work outdoors, in all types of weather conditions and temperatures
  • Physical strength and stamina to include kneeling, squatting, bending, lifting, walking, preforming repetitive motions and standing for long periods of time
  • Minimum of one year of professional experience in landscaping or a similar field.
  • Valid driver’s license and driving record that is insurable by our carrier
  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related field (Horticulture; Forestry; etc.)

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of pre-employment drug testing, limited criminal history check, and a BMV check.
