Our FACILITIES MANAGER is a full-time, salaried, “hands on” working manager position. The Manager oversees the maintenance department in the repair all equipment and systems including HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, Utilities and all other mechanical systems relative to the daily operation of the Indianapolis Zoo, and in a manner that is consistent with the guidelines, policies and procedures of the Indianapolis Zoo, OSHA, and other regulatory organizations. Responsible for the maintenance, appearance, and to ensure optimum levels of safety of all buildings including exhibits, public walkways, driveways, and parking areas. This role supervises eleven (11) direct reports, including: HVAC, Warehouse Operations, Electricians, Plumbers, Carpenters, and General Maintenance Technicians.

Must be able to communicate with colleagues, vendors, and guests in an appropriate, courteous, productive manner at all times. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of leadership, and have the ability to lead and inspire the team.



  • At least ten (10) years of trades work experience, with at least five (5) years of supervisory/management experience.
  • A strong working knowledge of HVAC, electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Proven leadership, and performance management skills
  • Weekend work, holidays and overtime work as needed
  • 24/7 on-call availability.
  • Flexibility in scheduled hours
  • A High School Diploma or equivalent.  Post-secondary education, including additional trade schools, EPA universal certifications, Associate or Bachelor degree in a related field not required, but strongly preferred.
  • A valid Indiana driver’s license, and a driving record that is insurable by the Zoo’s insurance provider.
  • Must be a competent user of Outlook, Work Order Systems, Word and Excel.  Knowledgeable of Power Point, Project and Energy Management systems.


Physical Demands:

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • climb ladders and scaffolding, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, stand, walk, push, pull and lift.
  • perform heavy duty physical work, which includes lifting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • work indoors and outdoors in all kinds of weather.  Will be in a temperature range from –20 to 90+ degrees Fahrenheit.
  • work around moving mechanical parts, live electrical circuits and will be exposed to dusty conditions.
  • must be comfortable working with heights
  • be exposed to various solvents and cleaning solutions.
