Looking to make a splash in your career?!  The Indianapolis Zoo is looking for a part-time (20-29 hours per week) Aquarist to join our Oceans team.

The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal communication skills, a team-oriented philosophy, and demonstrated commitment to long-term goals of the Indianapolis Zoo. Experience working with marine fish, invertebrates, water quality, and animal training is preferred.

The successful candidate must display a professional attitude and appearance to both visitors and co-workers.  Must be temperamentally suited to work with aquatic animals and have good observational skills.

Aquarist perform manual work, which is at times physically demanding and strenuous, involving the care and maintenance of the animals and exhibits under his/her care.  Must be able to lift 50 pounds frequently.  Directly responsible for the health and well being of the collections assigned to his/her care.

Further the position requires the following:

  • Follow all safety Policies and Procedures of the Indianapolis Zoo
  • Professional work experience in animal training, care, and conservation preferred, not required.
  • Completing Area daily and weekly reports
  • Knowledge of water quality pertaining to marine fish and invertebrates is preferred.
  • Willingness and ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and temperatures.
  • Will be required to know and implement species quarantine procedures as directed by Area Manager.
  • Must be able to participate in and develop area chats, feeds and behind the scene tours.
  • Proven public speaking and presentation skills
  • Assist with research projects.
  • Assists with exhibit modifications.

Experience:  Professional work experience in animal training/ care/ conservation preferred, but not required.  Must have strong observational skills.  Will be required to work mandatory overtime, weekends and holidays.

Education:  Bachelor degree from an accredited college/university in life sciences is required.

Applicants must also have SCUBA certification or be able to acquire within six months of hire.  Compensation is commensurate with experience.
