New this summer and brimming with charm, this delightful exhibit will feature an irresistible abundance of guinea pigs—guaranteed to make you smile. This lighthearted, family-friendly experience celebrates these social animals and their big personalities, offering up-close moments guests of all ages will love.
The Newest Residents of Flights of Fancy
Guinea Pig Gathering will invite guests to learn about the natural history of guinea pigs, discover their wild relatives and make a personal connection with the Zoo’s resident herd.
Despite their name, guinea pigs aren’t pigs at all—they’re rodents! The “pig” likely comes from the squealing sounds they make.
Domesticated more than 8,000 years ago from wild guinea pigs native to South America, these animals were originally raised for food and later became beloved pets around the world.
Many wild guinea pig relatives live in habitats at risk, particularly in the Amazon region. Visit the new Amazonian Rainforest at Hilbert Conservatory exhibit to learn how protecting rainforests helps species—big and small—thrive.
