Zoopolis 500 presented by the American Dairy Association Indiana

May 20, 2015

Thanks to everyone who came out this year to watch the greatest spectacle in tortoise racing! This unique Zoo event and race fan favorite is held annually the Wednesday before the Indianapolis 500. The Zoopolis 500 presented by the American Dairy Association Indiana includes lots of family-friendly activities and features our radiated tortoises hustling to the finish line.

During the race, you can cheer on your favorite tortoise as they race towards the finish line! But these natives of Madagascar aren't racing for a trophy. Instead, they're after the delicious fruits waiting in the winner's circle. As they race down the course, be sure to check out their beautifully marked shells, which have star-patterned stripes radiating from the center (hence their name). Because of these markings, radiated tortoises are considered to be one of the world's most beautiful tortoises.

After the race, you can meet the winning tortoise and his "pit crew," our very own Zookeepers who can answer any tortoise-related questions and tell you all about our efforts to help these endangered animals. And the best part is all of the day's activities are included with your regular Zoo admission!

The Zoopolis 500 is one of our oldest and most popular events, and it was recently highlighted by Top Events USA website as one of the top in Indianapolis! See what the Greatest Spectacle in Tortoise Racing is all about!
