What’s Blooming Now - June 15, 2010
Looking to create a little wildness in your garden? This time of year is perfect for seeing some of our native wildflowers blooming as well as some fun cultivars. Visit the Virginia Fairbanks Sun Garden in the following weeks and take note of many of our Indiana natives. This week, cultivars of Asclepias tuberosa (Butterfly weed) and incarnata (Swamp Milkweed) as well as several cultivars of Monarda fistulosa (Beebalm) and didyma are taking the show, but you won’t want to miss the weeks to come.
If you like to change up your planting year to year, several annuals have a more wild form. Try Rudbeckia ‘Cherry Brandy’ or any of several types of Ageratum. You might also try any of several types of annual Salvia or Lantana just to name a few.
One of our favorite non-native, wild looking plants in White River Gardens is Knifofia uvaria also known as Torch Lily or Red Hot Poker. This plant is native to Africa and is a favorite for its brightly colored, rocket-like blooms.
