What’s Blooming in the Clowes Water Garden Beds July 16, 2010

WRG-Clowes beds 2010The Horticulturist for the Clowes Water Garden beds, Nina Evans, decided to lean toward the wild side this year and designed a planting that would mimic a flower-filled meadow. To create this look, she used several colors and forms of annuals, including a grass, with clumps of three or more of each of the flowers planted as sporadically as possible. (This was harder to do than you might think, since plantings tend to have a pretty well defined pattern.) All the plants are sun-loving and fairly drought tolerant. Most require some deadheading during the season. Here’s what you will find out by the pools:

 WRG-Stipa tenuisima
Nasella Tenuissima

 WRG-Helenium Dakota Gold
Helenium 'Dakota Gold'

 WRG-Dianthus Telstar Salmon
Dianthus 'Telstar Salmon'

 WRG-Salvioa Victoria White
Salvia 'Victoria White'

 WRG-Nicotiana Perfume Purple
Nicotiana 'Perfume Deep Purple'

 WRG-Verbena Imagination
Verbena 'Imagination'

  • Nasella tenuissima (Mexican feather grass) - A very graceful bunch grass. It moves with the breeze and its thread-like flower and seed heads look beautiful when backlit.
  • Helenium ‘Dakota Gold’ (Sneezeweed) -  A fine-textured, mounding plant that becomes covered with small yellow-gold daisies that look like little lollipops when they lose their petals. A nice re-seeder.
  • Dianthus ‘Telstar Salmon’ (Garden Pinks) - A short mounding plant with flowers whose edges look as if they have been trimmed with pinking shears. Also an good re-seeder from year to year without becoming troublesome.
  • Salvia farinacea ‘Victoria White’ (Mealycup Sage) - This salvia sends spikes of silvery-white flowers to add a little height to the planting.
  • Nicotiana ‘Perfume Deep Purple’ (Flowering Tobacco) - Also gives some height in a more open manner. Gorgeous purple-red flowers give off a light fragrance in the evening. Will also re-seed itself nicely in a good spot. Can take light shade and still bloom decently.
  • Verbena ‘Imagination’ (Trailing Verbena) - This great filler plant has ferny-looking foliage and vibrant violet-blue flower clusters.
