AZA Species Survival Plans (SSP)

gibbonThe Indianapolis Zoo actively participates in the AZA’s Species Survival Plan® program, with over 20 SSP animals in its collection.  An SSP program strives to manage and conserve a select and typically threatened or endangered ex situ species population with the cooperation of AZA-accredited institutions. There are currently more than 400 managed programs, each handled by their corresponding Taxon Advisory Groups (TAGs), within the AZA. Each is responsible for developing a plan that identifies population management goals and recommendations to ensure the sustainability of a healthy, genetically diverse, and demographically varied captive population. That means that how SSP animals are managed within our collection is the result of the collected wisdom of our staff and the SSP representatives, who cooperatively decide which animals reside in which institutions and which animals are recommended for breeding.  All animal management programs at the Indianapolis Zoo support our animal conservation mission.  Photo by Jackie Curts
