Giraffe Feeding presented by Meijer

Giraffe FeedingCome to the special feeding platform inside the Plains Biome for your chance to feed the reticulated giraffes, courtesy of presenting sponsor Meijer. Feeding times are 11am, 1pm and 3pm daily during the summer season only. During the spring and fall, times for the feedings will be posted on the sign by the feeding platform.

Meijer logoFor $2.50 each, a limited numbers of visitors are able to feed several pieces of sweet potato to one or more giraffes, with the individual number of people feeding dependent on the willingness of the giraffes to feed.

During this unforgettable experience, you can get up close and personal with one of the largest (and certainly the tallest) animals at the Zoo. When the giraffes come in for a bite, be sure to snap a few pictures and check out the size and beauty of their heads, with their large expressive eyes crowned by long eyelashes, mobile ears and long thin lips. You'll get to see the giraffe's black, prehensile tongue in action. Normally giraffes use their tongues to delicately pluck the leaves from tall trees without encountering the thorns on the branches. A giraffe's tongue can actually extend to 20 inches and is used in conjunction with the lips for feeding. The strength and agility of their tongues may even surprise you at first!

Proceeds from Giraffe Feeding help support the Indianapolis Zoo's animal conservation mission.
