We are looking for a full-time Aquarist in our Oceans Biome. Aquarists at
the Indianapolis Zoo work with fish, invertebrates, aquatic birds, as well
as help with special projects. For this specific position, the Aquarist will
primarily work with marine fish, invertebrates, smooth dogfish, and moon
Maintain active status in the Indianapolis Zoo
Scuba Diver program, unless excused by doctor's written request.
Follow all Indianapolis Zoo Safety procedures and
Able to understand water chemistry parameters.
Understand basic water filtration and filter
Assist with small system plumbing duties.
A minimum of one year professional work experience with
direct knowledge of similar or related type work is strongly
A minimum of a high school diploma or G.E.D. is
required, but a bachelor degree from an accredited institution
in Zoology, Biology, Animal Science, Wildlife Biology, or other
life-science field is strongly preferred.
Prior work experience at a zoo, aquarium, or
amphibian/marine life care-related organization is strongly
Excellent interpersonal skills, professional
demeanor and professional appearance due to regular visitor
contact, seasonal keeper chats, and media events.
Current SCUBA certification, or be able to acquire
within six months of hire.
ighly motivated and, once trained, able
to work independently with limited supervision.
Able to function and make contributions as a team
Proven decision making, problem solving, and
Temperamentally suited to working with animals.
There are strenuous requirements of this position,

Ability to work outdoors and indoors under all environmental

while performing various jobs.
Ability to perform very heavy work, exerting at least 100 pounds
of force occasionally, and or up to 50 pounds of force
Excellent visual acuity and hearing required.
Must be able to be successfully vaccinated against rabies
Possible occupational exposure (Category B employee) to human
bloodborne pathogens. Possible exposure to dangerous
chemicals (e.g. chlorine bleach, cleaning agents, etc.)
